Business ContinuitySimulation TrainingDeveloping a Business Continuity Program simulation is a unique skill that requires expertise, just as any other aspect of a comprehensive program development. Organization and an attention to details are essential. In addition, the ability to visualize a logical scenario that develops from the onset of a hypothetical disaster to a conclusion is often taken for granted but is by no means automatic. The MLC table-top simulation process involves three separate stages:
Prior to developing any exercise, it is important to first determine the purpose of the event and the desired outcomes (goals) that are expected by the participants. MLC develops its simulation scripts based on the specific needs and level of experience of the organization to be evaluated. The purpose of the simulation is not to "Pass" or "Fail". From MLC's perspective, there is no such thing as failure. Every exercise provides an excellent training experience and identifies areas that can be improved. This philosophy is emphasized by MLC during the process and in MLC's post-simulation review report. As a further assurance to the simulation participants, MLC is often asked to provide pre-simulation training sessions to walk each group through the process. This ensures that the participants are prepared and are familiar with the manner in which the exercise will be conducted. Simulation Logistics and Conducting the ExercisePrior to the simulation, it is essential that logistical planning is coordinated between MLC and the client's in-house staff. Logistics include the selection of an appropriate simulation site (at the client's facility or at a third party location), coordination of audio/visual equipment requirements, communications equipment and computer equipment set-up (telephones, satellite telephones, cellular telephones, E-mail, etc.), the development of Participant Guides, and room set-up (to meet simulation objectives). Post-Simulation ReviewImmediately after the simulation, MLC assesses the feedback from the participants and documents identified areas for improvement (along with areas that meet or exceed expectations). The Post-Simulation review also includes MLC's evaluation of the exercise and recommendations for improvement. The review report enables senior management to optimize the benefits of the simulation, i.e., identified strengths and weaknesses are clarified and documented so that follow-up action can take place. The review also provides a benchmark for measuring the effectiveness of future exercises. Finally, the report is often used for regulatory compliance audits as proof that Business Continuity Plans are in place and have been tested. |
